My name is Marie Kesten Zahn, your new Director as of December 4, 2019. I’m a Cape Cod native, having grown up in Yarmouth before undertaking my undergraduate and graduate studies in Florida and living elsewhere along the East Coast before returning to the Cape in 2016. Prior to becoming your director, I served as the archaeologist, artifact conservator, and educational coordinator for the new Whydah Pirate Museum in Yarmouth.
My background in archaeology and science has definitely given me a unique perspective and appreciation for history. In addition to appearing in various internationally broadcast media outlets, I also spend a significant time doing educational outreach to our local schools, libraries, and museums by guest lecturing and presenting hands-on activities throughout the community. When not at work or volunteering, I enjoy cycling and cannot wait to ride the bicycle paths along the cranberry bogs on the way to and from the museum once the weather improves! Both myself and my husband are happy to be back home on Cape Cod, where we have settled in South Yarmouth in a small house with a big yard for our three dogs.
Serving as your Director is quite the honor, and I am enthusiastic about extending my passion for celebrating and preserving local history in this new position. To all of the volunteers and members of the Harwich Historical Society who have already visited, called, and emailed: it has been a pleasure meeting everyone and I have felt so welcomed from my very first day here. I would like to invite all of our members to stop by during my office hours to introduce themselves and offer any ideas for programming for the museum. We have some great exhibits and events proposed for this year and I cannot wait to see what we can accomplish together.
Looking forward to a great 2020 season!
